Through December and into January, we’ve kept track of who’s played at some of our favorite venues, new releases, and of shows that had stellar lineups. We thought that it might be fun if, monthly, we picked out a few artists to spotlight who contributed to the scene and gave them a little written love. This is the first installment of “Spotlight,” or whatever we end up calling the series. What we have now is a god-awful name, so if you think of something better, please let us know.
And if you want to be included, just DM us on Instagram and we’ll take a look at your stuff! We don’t bite.
Puppy Problems (along with Really Great and Comfy), played Notch Brewing early this month. In September of last year, they released their sophomore album, Winter in Fruitland. Their music is the kind of chill indie rock you want to listen to on a cold night. With endearing vocals and catchy, almost poppy hooks, they’re just plain fun.
Little Fuss is playing Brighton Music Hall late in January (1/25) with a couple great bands (WINKLER, Hush Club). In September, they released an EP called Lovely Distraction, which is a short and sweet collection of infectious, unique tracks that got me dancing, at least. They’re pop, but…not. There’s an edgy, rock element to them that’s impossible to deny, which only enhances their musical and lyrical storytelling.
Cometra, who is playing at The Jungle on Tuesday (1/16), has one of the best Instagram bios ever written: “I wear dresses and make music, cry about it <3”. Said music is a mix of shoegaze, indie-rock, and singer-songwriter lyrical content that’s a joy to listen to. He released an album in December called absurdism. For your convenience, I pulled out my favorite track for you to listen to. Give it a try; you won’t regret it.
Three is not a big number for spotlight-ees, but give us a break – this is a first installment! Next time, maybe we’ll really do a deep dive, but we might need your help. Send us your music!
Make sure to support the local scene and go to a show this month. There are two above you can choose from, but shows are happening almost every day – you’re sure to find music to love if you just try.
